Thonburi is a historic area located on the western bank of the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok, Thailand. It was once the capital of Thailand (formerly Siam) in the late 18th century.

After the fall of Ayutthaya in 1767, King Taksin the Great established Thonburi as the new capital. It remained the capital for about 15 years before King Rama I moved the capital across the river to what is now Rattanakosin (central Bangkok).
