Wat Ratchanaddaram

🌟 Wat Ratchanatdaram Woravihara (Loha Prasat Bangkok): The Shining Metal Castle of Bangkok

If you’re exploring the old town of Bangkok, make sure to stop by Wat Ratchanatdaram Woravihara – a stunning royal temple best known for its Loha Prasat, or “Metal Castle.”
This hidden gem sits along Maha Chai Road, near Ratchadamnoen Avenue, right in the heart of Rattanakosin Island, surrounded by Bangkok’s most historic landmarks like Wat Saket (The Golden Mount) and Wat Thepthidaram.

🕰️ A Glimpse into History

Wat Ratchanatdaram was commissioned in 1846 by King Rama III for his beloved granddaughter, Princess Somanass Waddhanawathy, who would later become the queen of King Rama IV.
The temple’s name, Ratchanatdaram, translates to “The Temple of the Royal Niece.”

It was designed during an era when Thai architecture was influenced by both traditional Siamese art and Chinese decorative styles, reflecting the multicultural beauty of Bangkok during the early Rattanakosin period.

🏯 The Iconic Loha Prasat – The Metal Castle

The highlight of Wat Ratchanatdaram is undoubtedly the Loha Prasat, a striking metal spire structure unlike anything else in Thailand.

  • Standing 36 meters tall, it features 37 spires representing the 37 virtues of enlightenment in Buddhist teachings.
  • Its architectural concept was inspired by ancient Buddhist structures from India and Sri Lanka, making it truly one of a kind.
  • The Loha Prasat at Wat Ratchanatdaram is the only one in Thailand and one of only three ever built in the world.

The peaceful atmosphere and beautiful symmetry make this an incredible place for photography, reflection, and meditation. In the evening, the Loha Prasat glows beautifully against the skyline — a sight you won’t forget.

🪷 Inside the Temple Grounds

Inside the temple complex, you’ll find the ordination hall (Ubosot) housing a serene golden Buddha image named Phra Buddha Sadasada. The hall’s design perfectly represents 19th-century Rattanakosin art, blending simplicity and grace.

Walking through the temple grounds, you’ll experience a calm contrast to Bangkok’s busy streets — making Wat Ratchanatdaram a perfect stop for travelers looking to slow down and soak in authentic Thai culture.
